Work/Career

This year is proving a very successful one for Laurel’s (many) careers.  As most of you know, Laurel works for a hospital in Phoenix as a grant writer. This year a funny thing happened that blessed us greatly through her work there.

Our home business, Mountain View Resourcing, is still growing and in an effort to keep up with the growth we are contracting some of the work out.

Christian’s pursuit to become a Police Officer has had its ups and downs.  The exciting thing is that after 100 applicants Christian is at the top of the list to get hired on!

For Laurel, the commute is typically 60 to 70 minutes one way to the hospital.  The funny story began in September. Laurel took an hour lunch to meet with one of our clients for our home grant writing business.  As she was dressed up for her lunch appointment, her boss, later that day, pointed out and asked, “Nobody dresses up that nicely on Fridays, are you interviewing?”

At that point Laurel said “no” but that Christian was soon to be getting on with the Police Department and when that happened she would have to quit.  Before that day was over her boss got all the permissions necessary so that Laurel could work from home and offered any number of hours from part-time to full-time that she would want to work.  What a blessing!  So now Laurel is able to fully telecommute from home.

As for Mountain View Resourcing, our focus for the business has been to let it idle so we could balance family time with Christian’s pursuit of his career. So it is a blessing that it continues to grow without much effort.  We also are fortunate to have found decent people willing to freelance for us as we balance the workload.

The Maricopa Police Department was formed just this year, so Christian was expecting them to begin hiring early in 2008 .  This past spring, we were surprised to hear the department was expediting their hiring process because the city was on track to triple and possibly quadruple its size in the next three years.  In an effort to get as many recruits and lateral officers as possible by the end of this year, they rushed all the applicants through the hiring process in June and July.

Then in August the city stopped growing.  It seemed major obstacles (i.e. housing crisis) and even some scandals and controversy in City Hall along with of a city growing so fast without infrastructure caught up.  So the police postponed academy dates for Christian from July to August then to September and then to October.

In October, the number of officers needed to serve the city was not as great as originally anticipated and they switched their strategy to hiring only officers transferring from other cities until they are able to fill three shifts.  From that point they would begin hiring recruits as the need for new officers grows.  The last word we received was that they hope to fill all three shifts and become a fully functional Police Department in January and then later that month it is hoped that they will send the first of the recruits to academy. It has been an emotional rollercoaster as we would usually only learn a few days before the scheduled academy start date that they couldn’t make that date.  We will definitely let you know when it becomes a reality for us!
